Police in Wisconsin say they know people have places to go on Christmas Eve, but they're pleading with them to stay home if they can, or at least be very careful.

Blowing snow and howling winds are making driving treacherous, after a winter storm that's caused at least 11 deaths from the Plains to the Great Lakes. Sergeant Tim Elve of the Dane County Sheriff's Office says interstates are icy and rural roads are "really bad."

Power has been knocked out to thousands of homes and businesses. Winds have gusted to 60 miles per hour or more in Milwaukee and Chicago and an 88 mile per hour gust was recorded over Lake Michigan.

Airlines canceled 300 flights Sunday at O'Hare Airport in Chicago.
