Officials in New York now say the memorial to the victims of the September 11th terrorist attacks will not open until 2011.

A spokeswoman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey says extending the construction time period by two years puts the memorial, "Reflecting Absence," on a more realistic timetable. Candace McAdams says the goal remains to "work as aggressively as possible to complete the project as soon as possible."

Officials had maintained for years that the opening would be September 11th, 2009.

Construction of the memorial began in spring of 2006. It was briefly stopped while architect Michael Arad's design was altered to cut costs that were approaching a billion dollars.
