A Kentucky lawmaker plans to introduce a bill that would raise the age of consent to 18, after hearing about a high school band teacher accused of having sex with one of his students.

Under current law, a teacher is not prevented from having sexual contact with a student who is at least 16 and is a willing participant. State Representative J.R. Gray calls it an indictment on Kentucky, and opens the way for teachers to abuse their position of authority.

Several states have enacted measures similar to Gray's over the past six years.
