A former Nebraska schoolteacher has pleaded not guilty to federal charges stemming from her trip to Mexico with a 13-year-old former student.

The two were found earlier this month in Mexicali.

Kelsey Peterson looked nervous as U.S. marshals led her into court in handcuffs and ankle chains and later began to cry.

She'll remain in federal custody while a psychological evaluation is done. Her attorney says tests will show Peterson is not a danger or a flight risk.

But prosecutors report that Peterson has said she's in love with the boy and told police she wasn't sure she would have acted differently.

She is charged with crossing a border to have sex with a minor. State charges against her include kidnapping and child abuse.
