Two south Florida sheriff's deputies were killed this morning as they tried to stop a car reported stolen near the Everglades.
The Palm Beach County sheriff says the deputies were fatally struck by another patrol car while putting spikes on the highway to puncture the car's tires.
The deputy who was driving the car that killed his colleagues was being treated at a hospital for head wounds.
Two suspects fled from their vehicle during the chase and ran into a cane field. Dozens of officers hunted for them before calling off that search to follow up other leads.
