Supreme Court to examine D.C. gun ban

The Supreme Court could be ready to take its closest look at the Second Amendment in decades.

The high court announced today that it's going to decide whether the District of Columbia can ban handguns.

The D.C. government wants the court to uphold the ban that's been in place for 31 years. A federal appeals court ruling struck down the ban, saying it's incompatible with the Constitution's protection of the right to "keep and bear arms."

Both the city and the man who challenged the handgun ban had asked for the high court review.

It could mean that the debate over guns will be an issue in the 2008 elections.
