The Nebraska teacher accused of fleeing to Mexico with a 13-year-old boy is scheduled to appear in federal court today.

Kelsey Peterson was arrested in Mexicali on Saturday and now is being held in a jail in El Centro, California.

Authorities say the 25-year-old sixth grade teacher fled with the boy after stories surfaced that they had a sexual relationship.

Peterson is charged in Nebraska with kidnapping, child abuse and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. She also faces federal charges of transporting a minor across state lines or a foreign border for sexual activity.

The boy has been handed over to relatives in Mexico. He was an illegal immigrant while living in the U.S.
