Students at the University of South Carolina are grieving today after six of their classmates died in a weekend beach house fire in North Carolina.
A Clemson student also died.
The names of the victims haven't been officially released, but students are hearing by word-of-mouth which of their friends are among the six South Carolina students who survived.
A red and black banner with the school's mascot is flying at half-staff next to an American flag outside a fraternity house. Two black ribbons are wrapped around the columns of another house.
The school's dean of students says the group staying at the beach house included friends from the Delta Delta Delta sorority and the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
One student says she learned about the fire while studying in the library last night. She says the more she looked at details on the Internet, the more her heart sank.
Grief counselors are being made available to students today, both at South Carolina and at Clemson.
