ST. PAUL, Minn. A fourth-grade field trip to a Mississippi River park popular with fossil hunters has turned deadly.

Gravel saturated by persistent rain gave way Wednesday, killing one child and injuring two others. A fourth child is missing.

Fire Marshal Steve Zaccard says the landslide at Lilydale Regional Park swept over a group of children from an elementary school in the western Minneapolis suburb of St. Louis Park, Minn., burying one to the waist and completely burying another.

Another child suffered minor injuries in the landslide, which happened about 1:15 p.m. The three children were taken to Regions Hospital, and one died. The child with minor injuries was treated and released, and the other child is in serious condition

The search is proceeding cautiously for the fourth child. Zaccard describes it as a recovery effort.

Crews have set up lights and plan to search into the night.
