Tire mountain finally gone from suburban Flint

Posted: 11/09/2007 - He retired, leasing the site out only to later discover it was being used to stockpile tons of scrap tires. The pile had covered most of the 3-acre site by 1989. State law had made unregulated tire piles illegal two years later.

Detroit man convicted in deaths of girlfriend, baby

Posted: 11/09/2007 - Jimmie Reed Jr. was charged in the July 2006 deaths of 31-year-old Markeda Byas and 2-month-old Arctavia Reed in Pontiac. Authorities say Reed killed Byas, then returned and doused the bed where she and the baby lay with gasoline and set it on fire.

Census Bureau raises Detroit's 2006 population estimate

Posted: 11/09/2007 - The city's population is now pegged at 918,849. That's 47,728 more people than the 2006 estimate of 871,121 issued over the summer. Records will show the city's population grew about 4 percent from 883,465 in 2005 instead of slipping.
