West Michigan authorities say a Ludington police officer who was shot in the upper torso while responding to a dispute between a husband and wife has left a hospital.

The husband was shot in the shoulder and surrendered to police Tuesday night following a standoff in Ludington. He was treated at a hospital and jailed.

Police Chief Mark Barnett says it's fortunate no one was seriously hurt. He says Sgt. David Maltbie is recovering at home.

Police say the husband fired a long gun at officers and Mason County sheriff's deputies after they arrived at the home Tuesday evening. The officers returned fire and police say Maltbie and the husband were wounded in the exchange.

Barnett says police led the woman to safety.

So far, there's no word of charges.
