Niles, Mich. - A woman is in stable condition Sunday after she was stabbed Saturday night in Niles.

It happened in the 400 block of S. State Street around 7 p.m.

The woman's boyfriend was arrested at the scene.

Edward Vernon Doran, 40, faces multiple charges including aggravated domestic violence (second offense), assault by strangulation, assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder and attempted murder.

Doran was arraigned Monday and has another court appearance schedule for December 6.

Police evacuated several nearby homes Saturday because they thought they smelled gas. It was a precautionary measure.

Doran eventually walked outside, turning himself into police.

Police say the woman called police from a neighbor's home.

Chief Jim Millin of the Niles Police Department said the evacuation was for the safety of the surrounding neighbors.

"When the officers approached the house, they thought that they could smell the odor of gas," Millin said. "He made a comment about blowing up the house... obviously that did not happen. He did eventually come out of the house on his own and nobody was injured."
