A 55-year-old woman has been sentenced to life in prison in the brutal stabbing death of her young grandson's mother in a Detroit area home.
Onita Higdon will have a chance for parole in 15 years because the Wayne County jury that convicted her also determined she was mentally ill.
The Detroit Free Press reports (http://on.freep.com/PuJEq4 ) Saturday that a state parole board then will decide if Higdon remains in prison.
Higdon was sentenced Friday in Wayne County Circuit Court.
Mila Perry of Detroit was stabbed 34 times in July 2010 inside her boyfriend's Highland Park home. The 26-year-old Perry was the girlfriend of Higdon's son and mother of Higdon's 3-year-old grandson.
Higdon's attorney said Friday that if his client had received proper care Perry might not have been killed.
