KALAMAZOO, Mich. A 42-year-old West Michigan man has been sentenced in the slaying of his wife during an argument.

John Kovach was given 18 to 30 years in prison Monday in Kalamazoo County Circuit Court for second-degree murder and a gun charge. His sentence was part of a plea deal.

Kovach was accused of fatally shooting Nancy Kovach during a June 17 dispute in their Comstock Township home, about 45 miles southwest of Grand Rapids.

The Kalamazoo Gazette reports that Kovach told Judge Alexander C. Lipsey at the time of his plea that he had planned to kill himself in their bedroom but instead shot and killed his wife after she confronted him and called him a coward.

Their sons, ages 10 and 8, were in the house.
