Posted: Sat 10:58 AM, Aug 20, 2011

Authorities are confirming that a "weak" tornado touched down in the northwest corner of Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

The National Weather Service says in a release that Friday's twister initially touched down at a recreational vehicle park and campground in Ontonagon.

The tornado was on the ground less than a mile. Winds were measured at 85 mph.

Snapped and uprooted trees, broken utility poles, roof damage and a flipped boat were reported. No injuries were reported.

National Weather Service meteorologist Matt Zika says the tornado was the first to touch down on land this year in the Upper Peninsula.

The stormed was reported to have moved southeast later in the day. A tornado warning was issued Friday night for Menominee County.
