Volunteers pack food for Edwardsburg pantry

EDWARDSBURG, Mich. Michiana residents are giving back to hundreds of families that are in dire need of essentials around the holidays.

The Edwardsburg emergency food pantry and several dozen volunteers packed bags full of food Sunday night.

Volunteers at Our Lady of the Lake Parrish helped separate and collect non-perishable food items.

They lined up in the basement in an assembly line and passed the food all the way upstairs.

The process took about one hour, and the items will be distributed to 300 families.

"It’s all driven by the community stepping up and saying we know there are families out there,” explained Jeff Reese, pastor of Hope United Methodist Church. “We know they have needs. Some of them are our neighbors. We work with some of them. We're going to support. We're going to take care of the community, a phenomenal operation."

Gifts for children as well as the food bags will be handed out Monday afternoon.
