DETROIT Residents of a southwestern Detroit neighborhood have taken the law into their own hands with vigilante actions against a man accused of raping a disabled teenage girl, beating him on the street, spray painting his apartment building and forcing him to fee.

The Detroit Free Press says a 15-year-old girl with Down syndrome reports the 43-year-old man coaxed her into his apartment in the Medicantown neighborhood, then raped her.

Police haven't filed charges and continue investigating. The man's name and photo have been circulated in the area.

Last Monday, about five people spotted the man out walking and attacked him. He was treated at a hospital and then went into hiding.

The word "RAPIST!" has been repeatedly spray painted on the apartments, which have posted a guard.
