University of Michigan police say officers arrested eight students for sitting in the middle of an intersection to demonstrate in favor of tuition equality for students who live in Michigan but lack legal U.S. residency.

The protest happened Wednesday evening near the Michigan Union.

Police tell the Detroit Free Press that the students were taken to a police station and could be ticketed for obstructing traffic.

Minutes before being arrested, Michigan senior Yonah Lieberman of Washington said students seeking instate tuition status deserve support.

Those who were arrested were among about 60 demonstrators and were those who remained in the intersection after being told they faced arrest.
