UM says its research up 3 percent to $1.27 billion

The University of Michigan says the dollar value of research at the Ann Arbor school rose 3 percent to $1.27 billion in the latest fiscal year.

The university said Thursday that the volume of research was $38 million higher in the 12 months ending June 30 than in the previous fiscal year.

Michigan says its National Science Foundation's research funding rose 7.9 percent and was up 8.6 percent from the U.S. Energy Department, 15.3 percent from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and 38.4 percent from the U.S. Transportation Department.

The university says research funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services fell 8.1 percent, reflecting the end of the federal stimulus program.

Michigan says research grants and contracts from industry grew by 5.6 percent to $42.8 million.
