Buchanan High School's student fan section was honored at their last home game Thursday night for winning a statewide competition.
The students call themselves 'The Herd' and were declared the winners of the Michigan High School Athletic Association's 'Battle of the Fans II' on Feb. 22.
They beat out several other, larger schools with their choreographed dances, positive cheers and classic songs.
"It shows that you don't have to be the biggest," said student AJ Reed. "If you set your mind to it, you can do anything. And, we did."
Although the competition is already over, the students put on quite a show at Buchanan's game against Niles -- a rival they haven't played in years.
"They got a lot of people here, but we've got a lot more," said student Josh Money.
After cheering their team on for the first two quarters, the students were honored at halftime for their school spirit.
The school's athletic association presented them with a special plaque and banner.
"It's just good to know we are number one and our small school came together and we did it," Money said.
The students will be honored by the MHSAA on March 22 at the Class B Boys Basketball Semifinals in East Lansing.
The high school is providing two buses to get students to the event.
