State police are investigating the death of a Muskegon County Jail inmate who was found unresponsive in his cell after struggling with deputies during escape attempts.
Sheriff Dean Roesler says Monday in a release that 34-year-old Dahnontae McKinley was pronounced dead Saturday at a hospital. Autopsy results are pending.
Roesler says video shows McKinley pushing past a guard Saturday and being taken back to his cell after one escape attempt. Pepper spray was used during a second attempt to leave the cell, but had no effect.
Deputies were able to place McKinley in a "restraint chair" inside his cell. He later was found unresponsive during a routine check.
Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
Roesler says McKinley was lodged in the jail on Dec. 14 on robbery charges.
