The ex-chief of a public housing agency in Monroe County has been sentence to three years of supervised release and five months of home confinement for taking $32,000 of public money for personal use.

The FBI says 56-year-old Kay Jean Axel was sentenced Thursday in Detroit federal court. A judge also ordered her to make restitution for the theft.

She served as executive director of the Luna Pier Housing Commission in 2007-2010. Luna Pier is near Lake Erie, 50 miles south of Detroit.

Authorities say Axel used credit cards or took cash belonging to the agency for personal expenses. She pleaded guilty in a deal with prosecutors.
