DETROIT Local and state authorities are holding an event to collect DNA samples from family members of missing people to help solve cases.

The free Identify the Missing program is scheduled throughout the day Tuesday at the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office in Detroit. Organizers say family DNA samples also will be collected to identify remains at the morgue.

Authorities say families are encouraged to bring police reports, photos, X-rays, medical and dental records and at least two biological relatives of the missing.

Local, county and state law enforcement agencies are joined in the effort by the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System. This is the second such event this year.

Organizers say DNA collected at the June event helped solve the disappearance of a woman in March.
