Gov. Rick Snyder says he's pleased that President Barack Obama and members of the U.S. Senate are tackling immigration problems, calling the effort "critical."

The Republican governor released a statement Wednesday, a day after Obama declared "now is the time" to fix broken immigration laws.

Snyder says the nation's "current immigration system is inflexible and broken" and has hurt the economy by deterring foreign investment. The governor says he's looking forward to working with Obama, Congress and governors "to see that legislation is enacted this year."

Separate White House and Senate proposals focus on the same principles. They include providing a way for most of the estimated 11 million people already in the U.S. illegally to become citizens, strengthening border security and cracking down on employers who hire illegal immigrants.
