EMPIRE, Mich. A store specializing in selling surf and kayak equipment is celebrating 10 years in business in the tiny village of Empire.
The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports ( http://bit.ly/1lSyxss ) that Beryl Skrocki saw a need for such a business when she launched Sleeping Bear Surf and Kayak in 2004 in the Leelanau County lakefront community.
The shop started by selling and renting surfboards, skimboards and body boards. It also gave lessons and did repairs. The store has since expanded with clothes, stand-up paddleboards, bicycles and longboards.
Opening a surf business in the town was a risk, but Skrocki says it was worth it. She employs her children at the store.
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore recently was listed in Outside magazine's Top Ten Places to Hang Ten in the U.S.
