UPDATE: One person killed in mobile home fire

BENTON HARBOR One person died when a mobile home caught fire early Wednesday morning.

It started just before 1 a.m. in the 1200 block of E. Empire in the Orchard View Estates mobile home park. It's west of the Modar, Inc. production facility. Crews were on the scene for about two and a half hours.

Investigators say 73-year-old Robert James Sr. was inside at the time and did not survive. He was the only person in the home at the time.

The Benton Township Fire Dept. says several neighbors tried to help the man out but were consumed by smoke. None of them were injured.

The cause of the fire has not been determined at this time. The Michigan State Fire Marshal will be on scene Wednesday. Officials say they found James' body in a rear bedroom after the fire was extinguished.

There have been several fires at Orchard View Estates in the past, but this is the first this year.
