HARRISON TOWNSHIP, Mich. U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin says his panel has approved a plan to preserve the Air Force's Michigan-based A-10 attack aircraft in the budget for the coming fiscal year.

Among units flying the A-10 is the 107th Fighter Squadron at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Macomb County's Harrison Township, near Mount Clemens. President Barack Obama's proposed fiscal 2015 budget would have eliminated the A-10s.

Levin said Thursday that there's "broad support on the committee for maintaining the important capability that the A-10 provides."

The Michigan Democrat says the Senate version of the budget is stronger than the House-passed version because it doesn't depend on balancing savings in overseas military costs to retain the A-10s.
