NEW BUFFALO TOWNSHIP Metal thefts are on the rise, and police have caught two men they believe are responsible for at least two separate incidents.

23-year-old Chad Wingard and 51-year-old Kevin Johnson, both from Michigan City, are accused of stealing scrap metal from the Whittaker Woods storage units on Wilson Road in New Buffalo Township. They were arrested at the crime scene.

The men are also suspects in a metal theft that occurred in the area in late November.

Police say scrap metal thefts in the New Buffalo and Three Oaks areas have increased over the past several months, especially at storage units.
