The LaSalle Council Boy Scouts of America have one goal on their minds this Saturday, to collect 90,000 edible items to donate to food pantries across Michiana.

Saturday kicks off the group’s largest service project, “Scouting for Food.” Every year, the group involves thousands of Boy Scouts and volunteers across eight counties in Northern Indiana and Southwest Michigan.

Scouts spent last week distributing collection bags in residential areas and will return on Saturday morning to pick up donations. Also, there are two drop-off locations.

Scouts will spend Saturday morning and part of the afternoon at the Morris-1st Source Scout Center in South Bend and the Concord Mall in Elkhart.

Anything from canned items to baby formula is okay to donate.

Last year, the group donated 80,000 items to Michiana food banks.

Kroger Foods is once again sponsoring the Scouts' drive. During March, area Kroger stores will offer pre-packaged food bundles for customers to purchase and donate on behalf of the Boy Scouts.
