Retired teacher wins $200,000 in Mix & Match prizes

As she claimed her Hoosier Lottery winnings, Carol Thurston of Niles, Mich . said "It's unbelievable! You play because you want to win, but you don't really think you will. You don't think it will be you. This time it was me!"

It sure was! Thurston won a $200,000 Mix & Match top prize when her ticket matched five of five numbers on one line in the July 8 drawing. Thurston and two girlfriends made a day of claiming her prize at Hoosier Lottery Headquarters in Indianapolis Wednesday. After they picked up her check, the trio of retirees planned to have a nice lunch in Indianapolis.

Thurston is a retired physical education teacher and coach. She purchased her winning ticket at The Pop Shop at 50510 US Hwy 33 North in South Bend, Ind. Thurston says it is the only place she buys Hoosier Lottery games. Mix & Match is the only Hoosier Lottery game she plays. She makes a special trip from Michigan to South Bend weekly to play the game she loves. She says she loved Mix & Match even before she won big.

"It's (Mix & Match) so much fun! It's fun to check your numbers," said Thurston. "I seem to win a lot." Thurston says she plans to travel and do some home renovations with her winnings.

"Maybe I'll just have some fun, too!" said Thurston with a laugh.

Mix & Match tickets cost just $2 and offer individual and combined-line play styles. The top prize is $200,000. Drawings are conducted every Tuesday and Friday.

As with all Hoosier Lottery games, the net income generated from sale of Mix & Match is turned over to the state. Last year, the Hoosier Lottery transferred $190 million to the state where it was allocated to teachers, police and firefighters retirement funds as well as the Build Indiana Fund which ultimately reduces Hoosiers' license plate costs.

Players have 180 days to claim prizes on Hoosier Lottery draw games. The Hoosier Lottery reminds players to always play responsibly.
