A busy stretch of highway is crumbling underneath, which means heavy trucks will not be allowed to drive it, and that includes fire trucks.
The Berrien County Road Commission is reducing the weight limit along the section of the Red Arrow Highway in Chikaming Township.
A culvert is failing, so trucks over 15 tons cannot drive over it.
Instead, they will be detoured to Three Oaks Road, between Warren Woods and Sawyer.
Reporting partners at The Herald Palladium say school buses will still be able to drive the Red Arrow Highway, but some fire trucks will not.
However, exceptions will be made for emergencies.
The commission does not know how long it will take to replace the culvert.
