PORT HURON, Mich. Police say an ex-convict has been charged with rape, torture and murder in the deaths of a couple at an apartment complex in Port Huron.

Port Huron police Capt. Jeff Baker says that 31-year-old Manuel F. Gamez of Port Huron man was arraigned Tuesday on two open counts of murder, two counts of torture and one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct.

A judge ordered Gamez held without bond and set a preliminary examination for Aug. 20.

Police say they don't know if he has a lawyer. They didn't disclose his previous crimes.

Police say officers found the bodies of 29-year-old Daniel W. McRoberts and 26-year-old Melissa R. Ichenberg on July 30 at the Gratiot Village apartments.

Autopsies show McRoberts was stabbed and Ichenberg was strangled.
