The course for this weekend's marathon in Michigan's capital city has been changed following heavy rains and flooding in the Lansing area.

Organizers announced that a flood warning for the Red Cedar River led them and city officials to modify the course for Sunday's full- and half-marathon events. The original course route was designed to incorporate a double loop using almost 7 miles of the Lansing River Trail.

Portions of the trail are expected to be flooded this weekend.

Police earlier this week said security will be stepped up for the Lansing Marathon following the bombings at the Boston Marathon.

In a statement posted Thursday, race organizers said the change "will in no way affect our level of security or safety for our participants, volunteers and spectators."
