ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) - A suburban Detroit man has been ordered to submit to a psychiatric examination to see if he is competent to stand trial in connection with a house fire and explosion that killed his 69-year-old mother.
The Daily Tribune of Royal Oak reports that 50-year-old Timothy Beetschen is still being treated for burns to his legs and was unable to attend Friday's court hearing.
Beetschen is charged with murder and arson. His preliminary examination has been delayed until Sept. 5.
The May 23 fire at the Royal Oak home, north of Detroit, may have been caused by an exploded propane tank.
Firefighters found Maxine Hadley's body in the basement. Hadley had called police earlier that morning to report that her son was trying to blow up their home.
