The Kalamazoo County prosecutor's office says it won't charge the Kalamazoo police sergeant who fatally shot an unarmed 34-year-old man in a hotel lobby.

The Kalamazoo Gazette reports Prosecutor Jeff Getting said Friday that Sgt. Sean Gordon's use of force was "reasonable" and "necessary to protect himself and others." Getting added that police did everything they could "to end the incident nonviolently."

Authorities say Jacob Grassley failed to obey orders by officers who caught him Jan. 24 at the Best Western Hospitality Inn. He was being pursued as part of a domestic assault investigation.

Police say a woman had told police that she believed Grassley had taken three weapons from her Kalamazoo home.

Getting says Grassley's death was tragic and he offers condolences to his family and loved ones.
