A proposal to merge and combine the resources of financially struggling Pontiac with Oakland County is receiving no support from county Executive L. Brooks Patterson.
Patterson tells the Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News for stories Saturday that there is no legal means for the county to absorb Pontiac and that he would stand against doing so, anyway.
He said the county would be asked to take on Pontiac's financial burden.
Pontiac emergency financial manager Michael Stampfler raised the prospect of the county merging with the city in a letter this week to Patterson.
Stampfler said in the letter that Pontiac's budget deficit is expected to reach $12.5 million by June 2012.
Stampfler has said the city may have to declare bankruptcy.
The 58,000-resident city is Oakland's county seat.
