A township board in suburban Detroit that opened a meeting with a prayer has drawn the attention of the American Civil Liberties Union.
The Oakland Press of Pontiac reports the Nov. 27 meeting of the Oakland Township Board of Trustees opened with the prayer in the name of Jesus.
The ACLU of Michigan's Oakland County branch sent a letter on this week to township Supervisor Terry Gonser about the prayer. Gonser says that the prayer was said by a trustee because it was the board's first meeting after the November election.
The ACLU says the prayer singles out one religion over others and such meetings shouldn't be opened with "sectarian invocations."
Township officials plan to meet soon to decide how to respond to the letter.
