Unmarked trucks will be in construction zones over the holiday weekend to catch speeders, tailgaters and other offenders.

The Indiana Department of Transportation has nine specially equipped, unmarked pick-up trucks that will be in use.

They're equipped with "lidar,” which is similar to radar but uses laser light to measure distances between vehicles. It allows police to determine if drivers are following too closely. That is the top cause of work zone crashes.

Police agencies in both Indiana and Michigan will be stepping up all patrols over the holiday.
