Police evacuate homes near Detroit warehouse fire

DETROIT A Detroit charter school and residents in an eastside neighborhood were evacuated as firefighters battled a blaze in a large commercial warehouse.

Flames from the building could be seen for blocks Thursday afternoon, while thick, black smoke spread out for miles from the fire.

WDIV-TV reports that the fire is at chemical company. The neighborhood is a mix of homes, small shops and warehouses.

Fire officials have called it a level 3 hazardous material situation.

WXYZ-TV reports that police are evacuating houses and businesses in a 3-block radius around the building. Traffic also was blocked from nearby streets.

A Detroit Public Schools spokeswoman says police helped evacuate White Elementary School due to air quality issues. The school is a charter authorized by the district.
