DOWAGIAC Five members of the Dowagiac police and fire departments are being hailed as heroes.

The director of public safety gave them life-saving awards during this week's council meeting in recognition of a life they saved back in august.

Officer James Kusa, Officer Matthew Behnke, Captain Michael Mattix, Lieutenant Robert Nelson, and Lieutenant Robert Smith responded to a call from a concerned family member who was afraid a relative was in danger.

The officers broke down the door and found the victim unconscious. They rushed the patient to the hospital and saved a life.
A committee reviewed their actions and determined they went above and beyond their duties to save the patient.
