Authorities believe bitter cold temperatures played a role in the death of an 87-year-old woman whose body was found in a Detroit-area ditch.

Allen Park fire Sgt. Craig Hickey tells the Detroit Free Press the woman "was very, very lightly dressed. No hat, no jacket."

She was pronounced dead at the scene Wednesday, and her name wasn't released.

Police Lt. Jeff Rimer says the woman lived nearby, "apparently walked away from her home and succumbed to the elements."

A low temperature of 5 degrees was recorded Wednesday morning in Wayne County.

Hickey says his "heart broke" for the woman, "knowing she was alone in that ditch."

The Detroit News reports the county medical examiner's office is to conduct an autopsy on Thursday.
