Flint-area police say a 17-year-old boy was punching and shoving his mother and sister when his father fatally shot him.

Clayton Township police Chief Scott Pavlik says the shooting happened about 1:15 p.m. Sunday in the Genesee County community, which is about 10 miles west of Flint.

Pavlik tells Mlive.com that the boy and mother were arguing when he began to act violently. The chief says the 64-year-old father heard the fight and left his bedroom with a .45-caliber handgun, then shot the teen once in the abdomen.

Pavlik says police have had a lot of contact with the teen over his behavior.

The father is jailed on open murder and firearms charges. His name hasn't been released.
