SOUTHFIELD, Mich. Authorities say an off-duty Detroit police officer fatally shot a gun-toting 17-year-old boy who tried to carjack him at an apartment complex.

Police say the 33-year-old officer was getting out of his car at Sutton Place Apartments in Southfield early Monday when the Southfield teen approached him. Police say the officer shot and killed the 17-year-old, who was carrying a .38-caliber revolver.

Lt. Nick Loussia says police have arrested three Southfield teens as suspects in the carjacking attempt. One is 17 and the other two are 16.

Loussia says police recovered two other handguns.

Police say the off-duty officer lives in Southfield.
