Police: 2 injured in crash after gin theft

Authorities in southwestern Michigan say a group of people swiped three half-gallon bottles of gin from a store and then crashed a vehicle into a tree, injuring two passengers.

Police say four people in the vehicle had just left a Meijer Inc. store in Portage when they crashed late Monday in nearby Kalamazoo and fled on foot. Police found them nearby. Two of the passengers were injured, including one severely. The injured were last listed in stable condition at a hospital.

The driver was identified as a 37-year-old Kalamazoo resident. The driver was arrested on suspicious on operating while intoxicated causing serious injury, leaving the scene of an injury accident and driving on a suspended license. Formal charges are pending from prosecutors.

Portage police were investigating the theft.
