Gov. Rick Snyder has signed laws that give kids the opportunity to say the Pledge of Allegiance each day in Michigan public schools.

The laws kick in during the next school year. All students will have a chance to say the pledge but no one will be compelled. U.S. flags are required in classrooms where the pledge is recited. Veterans will help districts that can't afford flags.

More than 40 states require public schools to offer a recitation of the pledge.
