Pipe maker plans plant on former Buick City site

FLINT, Mich. (AP) An Alabama-based industrial pipe maker says it's building a manufacturing plant on the former site of General Motors Co.'s former Buick City complex.

Officials from Genesee County and American Cast Iron Pipe Co. announced plans Wednesday for the plant expected to employ as many as 60 people. The massive site on which auto production began in the 1890s has been idle for more than a decade.

The Flint plant will join seven other American Cast Iron Pipe locations.

The Birmingham, Ala.-based company - the first to build on the Buick City site - recently signed a contract to provide pipe for a new water pipeline to tap Lake Huron. The Karegnondi Water Authority project broke ground earlier this year and could serve residents elsewhere in Genesee, Lapeer and Sanilac counties.
