LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan abortion foes have submitted more than 300,000 signatures to strike abortion coverage from health plans unless a woman purchased a separate insurance policy.

If enough signatures are valid, the Republican-controlled Legislature can vote on it, possibly by the end of the year. If lawmakers reject it, the proposal would go to voters in November 2014.

The effort is led by Right to Life of Michigan. The secretary of state's office said Friday it will take about two months to go over a sample of the signatures. Supporters turned in about 60,000 more than required.

Sen. Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat from East Lansing, says it's "offensive" to make a woman buy abortion insurance for rape. She's promising a fight in the Legislature.
