A park in New Buffalo Township is about to get a face lift now that construction permits have been obtained.
According to the Harbor Country News, construction is set to begin on May 1 to build a 300 foot skywalk and treetop level observation deck at the Galien River Country Park. The $925,000 project will move forward this month with a request for bids.
If all goes according to plan, the park will open to the public on Sept. 1. Work was supposed to have started in 2011, but due to a prolonged permit acquisition process, the project was delayed.
The construction plans include expanding a boardwalk into wetlands along the Galien River, requiring a review by the State Historic Preservation Office to determine whether or not it would disturb any sites.
The new additions will provide panoramic views of the marshland and the river, as well as include a new entry drive and parking lot.
A $500,000 state grant, $300,000 from the Pokagon Fund, and $125,000 county money are helping fund the project as it moves forward.
