Visitors driving through Benton Harbor will soon be treated to new scenery.
On Friday students from Michigan Works-Bridge Academy joined forces with members of the patriotic group Lest We Forget to plant 214 American flags on both sides of the entrance to the Southwest Michigan Regional Airport.
Those involved say they hope it beautifies the area and shows Berrien County's patriotism while Harbor Shores plays host to the Senior PGA tournament.
"Benton Harbor is rebounding," says Bill Langbehn of Lest We Forget. "It's got a new spirit, and this sort of helps to rekindle that spirit."
Lee Scherwitz of Southwest Michigan Regional Airport adds, "When our guests arrive, if they feel good about the area that they're in, the opportunity for them to come and set up business here is a great opportunity and we need to let them know we want them to come to Southwest Michigan. Economic development here is what we're after!"
The flags will fly along the road through May 27 and will again make an appearance for the Lest We Forget World War II re-enactment in June.
