MONROE, Mich. An Ohio prison inmate has been arraigned on murder charges in a 1972 killing spree in Michigan.

Laurence Lamont is accused of abducting three men at stores in Michigan and Ohio and killing them in Monroe County, Mich. Another suspect in the killings died behind bars.

The 68-year-old Lamont has been imprisoned in Ohio for other crimes. He has come up for parole consideration but had his release denied after pressure from victims' families.

The new charges involve the abduction and killings of 36-year-old Frank Welzbacher of Sylvania, Ohio; Earl Ludlow of Temperance, Mich.; and 23-year-old Joseph Satcher of Toledo, Ohio.

A Monroe District Court judge allowed a court-appointed attorney and denied bond for Lamont during Friday's arraignment.

The Monroe Evening News reports the next hearing is Aug. 7.
